A certified translator is a translator member of the Québec professional order, called Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ).

No. OTTIAQ is a reserved-title order, in other words, only members of OTTIAQ can call themselves “certified translators”. However, a non-member can practice the profession simply by using the title of “translator”.

To become certified, translators are subject to certain quality controls, in particular, holding a specialized university degree in translation, or a solid pertinent work experience. Certified translators also benefit from the order’s upgrading courses, in addition to complying with an Ethics Code. When you call upon a certified translator, you know that he or she is a professional whose skills have been verified and you will have recourse in the event of professional misconduct since the profession is governed by Québec’s Professional Code.
